Evaluation of self-incompatibility and crossability in alloploid and diploid mustard species
Summary.

In the present study self-incompatibility and crossability of two alloploid mustard species: Brassica juncea (AABB, 2n = 36) and B. carinata (BBCC, 2n = 34) and two diploid mustard species: B. nigra (BB, 2n = 16 ) and Sinapis alba (SS, 2n = 24) were assessed. Crossability was evaluated on the basis of the pollen grain germination and pollen tube growth observation using UV light fluorescence microscope, and the calculated PGI ratio (pollen grain germination index). Based on the results of the research, self-compatibility of the alloploid and self-incompat­ibility of the diploid species have been established. Crossability occurred in the crosses between S. alba cv. ‘Bamberka’ and ‘Warta’, B. nigra (cross-pollinated plants) and between B. carinata genotypes.
