Increasing density of the city tissue and widening of the communication artery is a reason why the uniquely explicit in the 19th c. system of city verdure: public parks, squares connected with boulevards and alleys, gardens among blocks of flats and villa gardens, is disappearing. Probably this process started already in the 80’s of the 19th c. and its apogee took place in the second half of the 20th c. It was connected with limiting the city area, land prices (in the 19th c.), change in the city function and a need for creating a new administrative structure in the 20’s of the 20th c. as well as ideological changes and new architectural-urban concepts in the 70’s and 80’s of the 20th c. (reconstruction of the city centre). Preserved enclaves of the city verdure in Katowice, can become an essential factor of shaping contemporary leisure and recreation spaces, changing effigy and landscape of the city.
