Comparing the growth of some cultivars of the mountain pine (Pinus mugo Turra) grafted on different rootstocks in two dates
Summary.

Introduction. So far no studies have been conducted on the usefulness of rootstocks for many new mountain pine varieties. Therefore, the aim of the experiment was to compare the effectiveness of vaccination in two dates, five varieties of mountain pine on four different rootstocks.

Material and methods. The experiment was carried out in two series. Grafted rootstocks: Pinus contorta Dougl. ex Loud., Pinus nigra Arn., Pinus sylvestris L. Pinus mugo subsp. uncinata (Ramond) Dominated with pine trees Pinus mugo Turra. varieties: Amber Gold, Carsten Wintergold, Golden Glow, Wintergold and Ophir. The grafted method was applied to the side joint in two dates (January, March).

Results. The acceptance of the scion and plant growth in the first and second year of cultivation after grafts were evaluated. The highest percentage of accepted scions for the tested varieties was obtained on the Pinus uncinata rootstock at a later date of graft. Pinus nigra and Pinus sylvestris pads caused stronger plant growth. Applied rootstocks did not differentiate the number of increments of grafted mountain pine varieties. The more successful varieties were: 'Golden Glow', 'Winter Gold' and 'Ophir'.

Conclusions. The usefulness of all rootstocks for grafting tested mountain pine varieties was found. Especially Pinus uncinata rootstock due to better reception of grafted scions. The later date of graft was better than January due to the higher percentage of obtained plants.

Key words: grafts success, lateral increments, number of shoots
