Background. An increasing assortment of plants with decorative leaves is used as ground covers instead of lawn. This article discusses the suitability of new Heuchera varieties for cultivation in sunny urban green spaces.
Material and methods. 25 varieties of Heuchera were evaluated in a study conducted between 2010 and 2013. The plants grew in the ground, spaced at 40 × 40 cm. The ground cover was estimated upon measurements of the plants’ diameter.
Results. 12% of the varieties fully covered the ground in the second year of cultivation, 40% of the varieties – in the third year and 76% of the varieties – in the fourth year. In the second and third year the surface of the ground cover decreased because the leaves of ‘Amber Waves’, ‘Creme Brule’ and ‘Southern Comfort’ varieties dried and consequently the plants withered.
In the third year the surface of the ground cover decreased by 11% in ‘Beauty Color’, by 28% in ‘Ginger Ale’, by 23% in ‘Raspberry Ripple’ and by 1% in ‘Regina’, as compared with the previous year. However, in the fourth year these varieties almost fully covered the ground.
Conclusions. Every year new varieties of Heuchera appear, but their usefulness for urban green space is not evaluated. The research showed that most of the Heuchera varieties could be used as ground covers. It is recommended to observe the growth of plants at different spacing and in different positions.
