Health benefits of mangosteen

Garcinia mangostana is evergreen tree growing mainly in Asian countries. It is also cultivated in South America and Australia, and exported to Japan, China and European countries. Mangosteen is low calorie fruit, rich in many minerals, vitamins and antioxidants of which the most important are polyphenols and xanthones. Number of studies has demonstrated that mangos­teen has many health-promoting properties, especially: antimicrobial, anti-cancer, lipid-lowering and immunostimulatory. Bioactive compounds present in fruit and rind of the mangosteen have a strong antioxidant activity and they are capable of free radicals scavenging.
