Elemental composition and sources of PM2.5 in three Silesian cities: Wrocław, Zabrze and Katowice, Poland
Summary.

The goal of the presented work was to determine elemental composition of suspended fine dust (PM2.5), and subsequent application of the results in determination of probable sources of ambient fine dust in Wrocław, Zabrze and Katowice. All the collected PM2.5 samples were analysed for their elemental composition by using the EDXRF and PESA techniques. The PM2.5 sources were identified using principal component analysis (PCA). Multiple linear regression analysis (MLRA) was used to determine average contributions of particular group-sources to concentrations of PM2.5 at the measuring points. The greatest part of PM2.5 (78% in Katowice, 66% in Wrocław, 36% in Katowice) originated from combustion (fossil fuels, biomass, and wastes in domestic furnaces; liquid fuels in domestic furnaces and car engines). The remaining identified sources were characteristic of a sampling point.
