Water permeability of blast furnace slag, fly ashes and their mixtures
Summary.

The paper presents results of water permeability tests of chosen blast furnace slag, fly ashes and their mixtures. The test material was: blast furnace slag (0-31.5 mm) from the main slag heap Pleszów of the steelworks ArcelorMittal Poland, fly ash from the power station Skawina S.A. and mixtures of the slag with the ash, where the contents of the ash was 10, 20 and 30% (by weight). It was stated, that the water permeability of the tested materials depended mainly on compaction. The increase of the compaction index (IS) from 0.90 to 1.00, caused the decrease of the permeability coefficient by one, two or even about three orders of magnitude. The addition of the fly ash to the blast furnace slag resulted in its sealing and, as a consequence, the significant decrease of the permeability coefficient: from the order of 10-3-10-4 m·s-1 for the slag to 10-7-10-8 m·s-1 for the slag with 30% addition of the ash.

Key words: industrial wastes, blast furnace slag, fly ashes, geotechnical properties, water permeability
