The investigations of an influence of human activity on epiphytic lichens and biomonitoring research were conducted in Bielsko-Biała. Appearing of epiphytic lichen species was studied. Simultaneously transplantation experiment was carried out by exposition of Hypogymnia physodes thallus and its chemical, biochemical and microscopy analyses. Floristic research of epiphytic lichenobiota showed differences in taxa composition and their vitality in particular places. It enabled to draw lichenoindication zones. Zone pattern was of insular character and there was no “lichen desert”. Results of remaining methods also proved that life factors for lichens in the town vary in time and space. The level of elements concentrations in lichen thalli after the exposition grew up in particular stands even to several hundreds percent. Similary the microscope analysis and study of chlorophil/pheophytine ratio demonstrated huge negative changes in lichens health. The pattern of lichen species distribution, lichen vitality zones and pollutions zones corresponded to each other, what was confirmed by correlation indexes as well. All used methods determined the south woodland areas of the Beskidy Mts as a very advantageous factor for the town environment. Very unfavourable conditions for lichen biota dominate in the centre of the town and in the north highly industrialized, strongly polluted terrains. All the results shown on the zone pollution map formed synthetic lichenoindication zones.
