The industry, developing from the nineteenth century, takes more areas of Poland, intensively built and polluted which become by its waste at every stage of production. Organic compounds, formed as industrial products and waste belong to the most dangerous elements for the environment. To the group of compounds belong mainly polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, volatile aromatic hydrocarbons, chlorophenols and pesticides. These compounds are naturally toxic, sometimes very strongly, and in excessive quantities constitute a threat to human health. Activated carbons (AC) remove organic compounds, even when they occur in water in small or trace amounts. In addition to good sorption properties in relation to organic substances, AC also show selective ion exchange properties which enables it to be successfully used to remove metal ions from wastewater. The article presents the results of sorption of manganese and phtalic acid from one-factor solution and manganese in presence of phtalic acid from two-factor solution at pH 6 and 9. In the experiments the specially modified activated carbon WG12 was used. Four samples of activated carbons (from seven) were thermally oxidized in a rotary kiln under different temperature in presence of CO2 or water-vapour (H2O). Two other samples of AC were impregnated by KMnO4 in concentrations 64 and 96 g KMnO4 in 1 l. One sample of activated carbon was used as blank sample (W1).
