Interactions occurring between microorganisms in sorghum silage and bacteria isolated from cows mouths and rectums
Summary.

Being a short day plant, in Polish climatic conditions, sorghum does not produce mature seeds, although it yields high forage harvest and, therefore, plans are made to utilise this plant as maize substitute. The aim of the performed analyses was to assess chemical composition and antagonistic properties of microorganisms present in the silage of ‘Sucrosorgo 506’ against potentially pathogenic bacteria occurring in the mouths and rectums of cows. Chemical composition was determined in accordance with AOAC requirements. In addition, occurrence of mould fungi, yeasts, lactic fermentation bacteria and Enterobacteriaceae was investigated. The performed analyses of antagonistic properties revealed the presence of inhibition zones in the case of pellicle from Shigella spp. and Salmonella spp. bacteria. No growth inhibition zones were observed against Escherichia coli. The main microorganisms which exhibited antagonistic properties were lactic bacteria of Lactobacillus brevis.

Key words: antagonism, pathogenic bacteria, lactic bacteria, PCR, growth inhibition zones
