An immunoenzymatic method for the determination of mycotoxins contents in cereals and feeds
Summary.

Mycotoxins are toxic secondary metabolites of fungi (moulds) belonging first of all to genera Aspergillus, Penicillium and Fusarium. Their presence in cereals and feeds leads to losses in animal production. The presently binding standard PN-EN ISO 22000:2006, while indicating the necessity to ensure food safety at all stages of its production and marketing “from the field to the table”, requires the control and withdrawal of mycotoxin-contaminated feeds and cereals from turnover. Thus it is a priority to develop rapid and effective methods of mycotoxin control, applicable throughout the entire food production chain. The aim of the study was to assess the presence of deoxynivalenol and zearalenon in cereals and feeds using ELISA. Analyses indicate the importance of mycotoxins as a potential hazard in feed production and the necessity to provide a systemic approach to ensure their safety. Among analysed cereals and feeds the highest deoxynivalenol concentration was found in maize and feeds based on maize. Similar results were obtained when testing cereals and feed for zearalenone contents. It was found that the immunoenzymatic ELISA method may be applied to assay mycotoxins in feeds and cereals. Test kits are practical and easy to use.

Key words: mycotoxins, deoxynivalenol, zearalenone, cereals
