Application of River Habitat Survey method for hydromorphological assessment of rivers and for evaluating potential restoration efforts
Summary.

EU member counrties are obligated by Water Framework Directive to improve quality of catchments at least up to good quality status till year 2015. It is crucial to assess existing ecological status of rivers, which will give a base for future actions focused on improvement of ecological status of water bodies. This article presents the River Habitat Survey method, which was used for hydromorphological assessment of water bodies on the example of chosen rivers located in the Narew catchment. Also, the viability of this method for the preparation of actions focused on river restoration was analysed. The results were used to assess hydromorphological conditions of investigated rivers, which gave the basis for their classification. The results were also used to prepare different ways of potential restoration efforts in the investigated rivers.
