Spatial analysis of the copper and zinc content in forest haplic luvisols (arenic, spodic) of “Wigry” sample area of integrated monitoring
Summary. In this work the spatial variability of the mobile and available forms of copper and zinc content in umbric horizon in the forest Haplic Luvisols (Arenic, Spodic) is presented. The research was carried out on the “Wigry” soil sampling area chosen for stationary investigations within the framework of the Environmental Integrated Monitoring. One hundred soil samples were collected from the umbric horizon (0-20 cm) from the surface of 1600 m2. Mobile forms of copper and zinc were extracted from soil by 1 M hydrochloric acid and available forms were estimated in 0.005 M DTPA solution, according to Lindsay and Norvell (1978) procedure. Spatial variability of copper and zinc content in soil was estimated by geostatistical methods. The spatial distribution maps of the investigated metals were drawn by using the semivariogram analysis. Principal component analysis showed, that copper and zinc extracted from soil were controlled by organic carbon content and cation exchange capacity (CEC). These trace elements extracted with the DTPA solution showed greater relation with the organic carbon content unlike copper and zinc extracted by hydrochloric acid solution with the CEC. The results revealed that in spite of the large intensity of research on the small area, contents of copper and zinc in the umbric horizon showed large random variability; it means that copper and zinc content can differ at the space smaller than the distance between sampling points. The findings presented here indicate that deduction concerning soil abundance or soil pollution on the basis of one or two samples can be very nonsubjective.
