The Maskawa River Valley in Środa Wielkopolska – the Possibility to Recover Scenic Values
Summary.

Background. The article presents design proposals for development of the Maskawa River valley in Środa Wielkopolska. It discusses the possibilities to restore the scenic values of this area and reconstruct natural-scenic and spatial-utilitarian relations between the town and river. The Maskawa River valley is an important green area of the town, where action needs to be taken to restore and maintain its high scenic and utilitarian values.

Material and methods. The research started with a photo inventory of the current state of the area. Next, scenic values of the Maskawa River valley were graphically and descriptively assessed upon site inspection and inventory. The existing spatial and functional relations between the town and river were analysed. The analysis enabled selection of areas of the town with the greatest spatial, scenic and utilitarian potential. A concept of development was prepared for these areas.

Results. There is a vast and winding Maskawa River valley east of Środa Wielkopolska. There is Lake Średzkie in the valley – an artificial reservoir on the northern outskirts of the town. Another watercourse, known as the Środa Stream (Struga Średzka), is a tributary of the Maskawa River.
It flows across the wetland behind the railway in the south of the town. The part of the Maskawa River valley between Lake Średzkie and the place where it connects to the Środa Stream is characterised by particularly good utilitarian and scenic values, which can be used as a valuable urban green space. The place is located near housing estates with services, where people have quick and direct access to the river. At present only the northern part of this place in the valley is partly developed near the dam on the lake. Our analyses show that it is necessary to restore the lost spatial and functional relations between the town and this part of the Maskawa River valley and to establish new relations. We prepared concepts for development of Łazienki Średzkie in the north of the town and a large area in the east, including part of the Maskawa River valley.

Conclusions. There are no large green spaces (forests) near Środa Wielkopolska which could be used by the inhabitants for recreation. The existing physiographic conditions with a large reservoir and watercourse near houses are a valuable contribution to the creation and reconstruction of areas of high utilitarian and scenic values. The resulting spatial and functional relations between the town and river will positively influence the urban landscape.
